MSS Held First Educational Meeting

The newly formed Mississippi Sleep Society took the first step in establishing itself as a major source of information for sleep professionals on February 13, 2009. An estimated 120 people attended the inaugural educational meeting of the MSS at the Mississippi Agricultural/Forestry Museum in Jackson, MS on that day. There were over 10 exhibitors and 5 speakers at the event. A maximum of 8 CEU's were available to the participants through the AARC and/or the ASST.

The speakers and their topics included: Ginger Blatt, RRT, CPFT, RPSGT - Process of acquiring AASM accreditation; Martha Smith, RPSGT, LRCP - Changes in Sleep Medicine and How They Affect Us; Sarah Broome, MD, DABSM - Sleep Loss and Sleep Objectives; Donna K. Cassell, MD - Complex Sleep-Disordered Breathing; Rusty Trim, RRT - The Link Between Sleep Apnea and Co-Morbid Conditions: CVD and Type II Diabetes. In addition to these lectures, Mr. Trim offered monographs on "Introduction to Sleep Diagnostic Equipment" for another 3 CEU's.

During the lunch break, an Election Committee was selected from among the attendees. This committee will be responsible for collecting nominations for the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer that will serve the MSS as the first elected officials. The members of the Election Committee are: NORTHERN REGION - Sharon Turner, Rashidah Shelton, Thelma Thomas, and Bettye Curry. CENTRAL REGION - Ron Hall, Sherri Chandler, and Chris Hope. SOUTHERN REGION - Amanda Moulds, Whitney Hathcock, and Jesse Byrd.

The committee presented the nominations to the members and elections were planned for the next educational meeting, scheduled for July 31, 2009. The process for submitting nominations, required qualifications for officers, and the list of nominees were available on the MSS website. The members of the Election Committee and their contact information are located on the MSS website under "Committees". The Society wishes to thank all of the vendors who so willingly contributed to provide lunch for the attendees. Your generosity is appreciated and all members are encouraged to support those vendors who support the MSS. We look forward to our next meetingMarch 4, 2011 and hope to see everyone there who is interested in the field of Sleep Medicine.
